Recognizing that you need support is the first step towards health and clarity. That’s why we're here. We’ll work with you to create a plan that will have you feeling confident, empowered and in charge of your life.

Black women often suffer from superwoman syndrome. The expectation to support our families, manage our households and excel in our careers at our own expense is unrealistic and unsustainable. Many of us began caring for others at a young age, even before we were mature enough to care for ourselves. The effect of this reversal of roles can continue into adulthood, leaving us with low self-esteem and poor boundaries.

How Parentification Therapy Works

During our first couple of sessions together, we gather information about you and your family history to see what is impacting your current reality. We discuss what you hope to get out of this experience by setting goals and implementing intentional checkpoints to make sure we are moving in the right direction. Parentification therapy works best when we focus on 1-3 specific areas of your life. The time frame of parentification therapy can vary greatly considering each person is different and has different levels of trauma. Most clients work with us weekly for 1-2 years. Our work together concludes when you embrace healthy coping mechanisms and you have mastered your ability to access them when stressful times arise.

Step 1 - Give us a call to book your appointment (or be added to our email list if you're not ready)

Step 2 - Ask a member of our team any questions you may have about the process (or when there is an opening you will get an email that displays available times)

Step 3 - Complete all intake documentation prior to your first appointment and start your healing journey

At Myers-Galloway Counseling, we want you to thrive, not just survive. Book your first appointment today.

Therapy for Parentification

In general, our community embraces strong cultural values of family reciprocity and role flexibility. Due to external factors, racial and economic disparities being the most prevalent, Black children are often forced to complete instrumental and emotional tasks around their home as a means of survival. Black women are parentified and adultified at higher rates than their male counterparts and by unfair circumstances, have been groomed to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. If you’ve been the primary support for your parents’ (emotionally + financially) or you felt like your needs were ignored as a child, we help you have compassion for your younger self and consistently set boundaries.

Therapy for Adult Children + Parents

There were many things that interrupted the bond and closeness within your family. Everyone has their version of the truth. If you and your parents are not on the same page about what actually happened in childhood but want a fresh start, we teach you how to navigate the changes in familial roles and respectfully communicate with each other.

Therapy for Professional Burnout

You're the one at work who brings tremendous value to the team. You're the only one working late yet not getting recognized for your contributions. You have been praised for being the “good girl” or the “shining star” in your family. If you’ve been dreading going into the office and barely have the motivation to do any work, we use evidence-based practices to help you recover from burnout and bring your core values to light.

Individual Therapy

We’ll help you look within to understand how to move forward to a happier and healthier you confidently. We help our clients work through the effects of trauma, grief, low self-esteem, family conflict, anger management, work-related stress, burnout, self-care and more.

Anxiety Therapy

The focus of these sessions is getting to the root of that real or perceived fear. Whether it’s fear of failure, fear of poverty, or a fear of being alone, we’ll help you explore and understand your definition of safety.

Depression Therapy

Constant feelings of sadness can weigh you down and impact all of the relationships in your life. Sometimes we don’t even realize that we struggle with feelings of unworthiness. We’ll help you address the changes in your mood and work with you to remove the mask layer by layer.

Trauma Therapy

Black women are uniquely impacted by generational trauma. Through counseling, we’ll share education and techniques that will help you manage and reduce the triggers that cause you pain. If your boundaries were betrayed and you feel the ripple effect in every area of your life, we will educate you on what trauma is and walk alongside you until you reach your version of healing.
